National Grid Gas Transmission logoNational Grid Case Study

Location/Area: Nationwide

Start Date: 1997 onwards

Duration: Ongoing

The Issue

National Grid play a vital role in providing energy to millions of customers across Great Britain through a multitude of sites across the country, many of which dating back to the 1950’s and therefore likely  to be effected by asbestos. With over 2,000 buildings and sites covering both electricity and gas there is a need to overcome a previous lack of asbestos management to ensure that the risk is managed and controlled under current HSG264 legislation.

The Aim

As sites and equipment come up for renewal and maintenance an asbestos management procedure was needed to not only meet HSG264 regulations but to ensure a safe working environment for all National Grid staff and visitors. A full project management service, from sampling and air monitoring through to training and software provision was required to manage these issues.

The Approach

Since 1997 AcePSI have been providing National Grid with a dedicated project manager and a team of competent, experienced, BESC trained consultants to assure quick turnaround for a variety of projects forwarded to us by National Grids Delivery Engineers. This also involves adhering to the organisation’s statutory obligations which include thorough training from National Grid for working across their UK-wide electrical and gas specific sites.; asbestos is not the only danger across there many substations, terminals and above ground installations.

National Grid Case Study

Around 2-3 AcePSI surveyors are responsible, on a weekly basis, for providing the surveying (prominently the HSG264 Refurbishment and Demolition Survey), re-inspection, air monitoring for asbestos removal, reviewing of management plans, site supervision and overall project management. Approximately 8 surveys are carried out weekly with monthly project meetings planned to help update the client.

Asbestos Registers are created as a result of our activity,  for each individual site, which are then updated and maintained to guarantee continued management of all National Grid sites.

This is made more straightforward by the use of AcePSI’s software programmes including our AMS Webtracker; our internet based application that allows National Grid to access to relevant asbestos information from remote locations on any device using a standard web browser. Training for this is part of the project management process, as is Asbestos Awareness training which is provided to National Grid staff at both operative and managerial levels.

The Outcome

AcePSI has been successfully managing asbestos related issues for National Grid for more than 15 years now. All projects until now have achieved 100% fulfilment, remaining well within-budget and accident free. Some highlights of AcePSI’s work partnership with National Grid include assistance for successful clearing of the Achilles audit and in achieving an Environmental ISO14001standard. The case demonstrates AcePSI’s good quality of work, technologically-innovative solutions, and the ability to provide a one-stop-shop experience for all the asbestos related issues on a national scale.
